Ahh! éa fait longtemps, trop longs! Excusez-moi tout le monde! J'étais très occupée avec mon emploi, mes devoirs, les vacances etc. J'ai eu aussi une grande problème avec mon 'account' ici, car j'ai oublié mon mot de passe (oui, je sais, quelle idiote!) et le nouveau mot de passe que j'ai demandée n'étais marchee pas au début. Heureusement, je pense qu'il marche bien maintenant Donc, je suis revenue à jamais I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year, Amandine! Did you eat a 'Galette des rois'? Yes at Christmas we have christmas lights hung from one building to the next in the high street in town, which is quite pretty. But, in general, its all the wacky lights and inflatable santas that people put outside the front of their houses that makes it feel christmassy We also have a German market, where you can get lebkuchen, wurst from Schleswig Holstein etc in the town. In our park near the bus station we hold a 'European fair', usually it is closer to Christmas time so you can buy christmas presents, but this year it was in October/ September for some unkown reason. It only lasts for a weekend, but its great. There are stalls from France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Belgium etc, selling chocolates, sausages, le fromage, meat, olives, bread, cakes, artworks like ceramics, paintings, jewellery, handbags, pashminas, pillows/ cushion covers, throws , ice cream stalls. They are also stalls like the Fair Trade one where I bought a 'Divine' chocolate advent calender fro myself. And there are local stalls selling local produce, local home made ice cream and so on. On Christmas Eve, in the centre of town , there is a public 'carol singing' event where the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Lord Mayor of Canterbury and the cathedral choir and Salvation Army Band all gather and the public sings with them. It gets you in a christmassy mood! Although, this year, I was working a lot around christmas, so I didnt really feel all that christmassy, and christmas day was a bit of an anti-climax as usual. We (me, my parents and brother) opened presents, had a big christmas lunch, pulled crackers, then felt very full up and sluggish. I hope all your exams went well! I had my first set of A Level French exams in January - AS. They didnt go as well as I would have liked as I completely ran out of time to answer all the questions on the listening paper! So, I will definitely get a lower grade overall because of this. I am trying my best, I found I got 63% in my last piece of coursework, which is not too bad! Although, the universites have asked me to get a B in French A Level, which is frankly impossible for me as I have only been studying it a year and 5 months from scratch and I work a lot in the week, so I am hoping when it comes to results day, the universities will accept me with lower grades Btw, thanks to everyone for their French help Its very much appreciated :smile2: Oh, I have had many accounts on TSR, most of which I have forgotten the password for, so now I just look at posts I like the foreign language threads best :D Alors, I wish you a great semester et Bonne Chance! -x-

Bon courage, OP (original poster) En Angleterre, la majorite de notre comediens celebrees ont etudiee a l'universitie, en particulier, a l'Oxbridge (Oxford et Cambridge). Naturellement, ils sont tres intelligent et ils ont n'arrete pas l'ecole a 16 ans! Francais et les etudes theatre sont les mieux etudes pour devenir un comedien, je croire :smile2: Aussi, si tu peux obtiens d'experience dans l'industrie tele, tu peux avancer sur travailler en face de 'camera' ou meme comme auteur/ realisateur des emissions comiques. I saw your commentary- I'm not on here that often as I am quite busy with work and studies at the moment ( I am doing my french homework right now- its a bit hard and boring tbh - its on the use of the subjunctive with il faut que and avant que!) Also, I often go on an english forum instead, because there's soo many more posts and its easy to read -I'm, lazy In fact, its the biggest student forum on the web, although anyone of any age can go on there. Its in English primarily, but there are many languages spoken on it and special threads or 'societies' for different nationalities. There are some french people who have said posting there has improved their english lots. The web address is www.thestudentroom.co.uk . I recommend it if you want to improve your english - theres lots of slang but at the same time many members write in 'standard' english! There's also a lot of jokes, but it will probably be hard for you to understand them at this point. Good Luck though. Bonjour Baptiste! Your english is very good! Only a few mistakes - its Edinburgh not Edimburg Lol, House. Its not exactly an english accent represented on that programme, but its better than nothing, I suppose. About going to the UK - I agree its hard when you are a student and dont have much money, although as I said before, getting the Eurostar or P+0 over for the day or a couple of days and gong to somewhere like London is really good fun,as there's soo much to do there and its not that far away from France. In fact, where I live in England, France is closer to me than London! Keep up the good work!

Hey Nina! Glad to hear you are trying to improve your English skills! Your english is much better than my french! The newspapers are generally hard to understand, even if you read the news in your own language (mother tongue) you will find that there are many 'technical' or 'posh' words or simply very specific terms being used. I tend not to read the newspapers as much as I should because of all the strange words in them! However, in comparison to stories, newspapers use 'standard' language of whatever language, so they should be easier to understand than books for a language learner because when you learn language at school you learn 'standard english' or 'standard french ' or 'hoch deutsch' etc instead of colloquial language which is spoken and often used in stories. I wouldnt expect you to be able to read all of Harry Potter! I am trying to read the french version and understand very little. Most of the bits I do understand are because I have read the english version already so I know what happens at that part in the book and then match it up to the french and guess its the same! Harry Potter and other stories tend to have many words that you wouldnt usually use in everyday language like 'witch and wizard and levitate' etc which it is unlikely you will have been taught in english at school! I wouldn't attempt reading Shakespeare or Dickens, personally as they are hard enough for me to understand, in fact, I dont really understand Shakespeare or Chaucer by reading them, only when my teacher told me what it all meant in overviews, what the story was about etc. The type of english used in Shakespeare is different to nowadays and for Chaucer its almost more like german, its like a different language! Like Amandine said, personally, if I was you, I would start reading some english childrens books like for example, Tracey Beaker or Goosebumps, as they are not too easy, but not too hard hopefully for you and they are interesting and enjoyable! Or even Malorie Blackman books (all primary school childrens level - 10 years) and then work your way up from that. But definitely keep up with reading the newspapers because although they are boring (unless you read all the celeb bits like from the daily mail etc) they will build up your vocabulary and improve your grammar! America isnt an english speaking country! At least not proper english, anyway! And they have horrrible accents over there. English accent is the real english acccent and the english language in England is real English! We know how to spell right. In england if you wrote 'color' at primary school in your homework you would get a serious telling off for not spelling it right. If you used words like 'trash can' or 'realize' in writing people wouldnt take you seriously! Also, the american pronunciation is really wrong sometimes too when they say stuff like anti-biotics ( they say an-tie instead of an-tee)! If you want to listen to some spoken english, I'd suggest watching Harry Potter (lol) or watching the BBC news (online) or the BBC radio etc. Or even better, get on the eurostar (yes I know its broken at the moment) or P and O ferries and come to England, you could go to London for the day Very cheap and much nearer than America! I dont use online translators, thank you very much! I know how rubbish they are In fact thats the first rule of language leanring your teachers tell at school in your language lessons 'Never use online translators, kids!. Firstly, because lets face it, its lazy and secondly because it never knows what you are trying to put across, it doesnt understand the context so chooses one word out of many for the same meaning, usually the wrong word for your sentence, the grammar is appalling and for many words it just keeps them in the original language in put because you spelled it wrong or because its not uploaded onto the translator yet. Having said that though, as long as you know this and you just want to use a translator briefly , usually, to translate from the foreign lanuage into your own, its fine. In fact, you are correct, because I did quickly put your sentence on boarding schools into babelfish because I didnt have time to look each word up in the dictionary, for a rough translation, however, I would never try and write my own sentences in french by putting english into babelfish! It would come out all gobbledeegook! Yes, I am definitely still in the process of 'learning' French. I've only had 80 hours worth of lessons so far! I do not expect my French to be perfect yet, as you know your English is not perfect, although I can understand what you are trying to get across, however, I know my level of french probably isnt high enough for real french people to understand exactly what I mean as I make too many little errors that change the meanings of sentences!

You must have worked very hard at school :) I would like to go to Leeds uni to study French and German, but I am also applying on UCAS (you will probably have heard of this in England) to Queen Mary's, University of London and the University of Edinburgh too! I've never been to Scotland before, but I saw that Edinburgh has a course for french and german where you dont need an A level in french, because you can take it from a beginners level- it is the only uni in the UK to do this, I believe! I shall apply for the French and German course there that is connected to European Union studies as well. Also, at the University of Edinburgh it is free to study for Scottish students and half price for Uk residents, so if I go there it will be half price tuition fees But I really hope to get into Leeds, as I have visited it many times because my friend studies dentistry there and it is a lovely town and they have a great Students Union At the moment I live in Canterury in Kent (I was born here) which is in South east England, below London. You will probably have heard of the Archbishiop of Canterbury, I think? We get lots of french school children here on school trips visiting the cathedral. They are very cheeky- one boy asked me for some cigarettes and he was only 13! I dont smoke anyway, so he had to ask other people in the street! The studentroom is great I think you will be able to understand a lot of it, except maybe some slang and some jokes, but I can see your english is of a very high standard from your last post I would love for my French to be as good as your english Imagine if I tried to write this post in French - you would understand none of it, I would make soo many mistakes Maybe to keep up your Russian you should listen to the news in russian and watch russian films? You could even do a language course in Russia or go on holiday there. My Grandfather is from Ukraine so I decided to learn some Russian at school evening classes as it is similar(ish) to ukrainian. However, the lessons were only basic and only for 22 hours altogether. I can remember all the numbers still - adin, dva, tri etc I would like to improve my russian at home. I have got some audiolessons off the internet and from my library in Russian and some songs by Leningrad on my ipod! I do not know if you know of this website, but I use it myself and it is very good for languages. It is called wordreference.com and it has french-english/english-french/spanish/russian/german/portuguese etc with a dictionary and synonyms, idioms and conjugated verbs. There are also questions asked in a forum. I have been studying it in the evenings for a year so far - one hour a week. I now have a GCSE in French (an english qualification for 16 year olds). I am studying more this year to take the A Level in French (its the equivalent to your baccaleureate). I have come on here mainly to improve my writing skills and reading skills in French. On an english forum for students www.thestudentroom.co.uk many people including 'Frenchies' (as we say in english) who post on that forum say that they have improved their english skills by posting on english forums, so I am trying to do the same, but in French! I would like to study French and German at univeristy in England soon. but I have to pass the A level first, then go to uni! In England, the level of foreign language teaching is nowhere near as high a quality as it is in non-english speaking european countries like France and Germany, so we have a poorer understanding of languages in England. It is a shame, because people like me who like languages are not pushed hard enough in school and the teachers will not teach us more advanced french early on. They take a year at the beginning of secondary school (11 years old) to teach you just to count to 100 in French and say your name, where you live, a bit about your parents and thats about it! Its ludicrous! Unfortunately, foreign languages are not compulsory in english schools, so you do not have to have a qualification in them, unless you choose to! If you choose to then you are special (like me) and hopefully there will be more jobs available for us And it is easier for foreign people to learn English as it is everywhere now - on television, in shops, in films, but foreign languages are not so easy to find in england! Lol, Amandine, I know how you feel, when I went to Paris in September, I felt too scared to talk much in French because I took a long time and my accent wasnt great. I went into Paul's (the bakery) for a chocolat chaud and pain au chocolat and the lady serving didnt understand my french accent- I had to repeat to her, Je veux/ voudrais un chocolat chaud, svp. It made me feel embarassed But the more you practice, the better you get. And in England people like the fact that you are trying to speak the language (I think this is true of many countries though). However, sometimes when I go abroad, for example, when I went to Germany a few years ago, I would try and speak German in the shops but the shop assistants spoke back to me in English, it was annoying because I wanted to improve my German!
