Now that I'm the stranger feeling stupid when I speak english in the middle of native english speakers in my new town, I wouldn't dare judging anyone else's skills at foreign languages.

Sorry, I know that my french is not that great. I have been studying it in the evenings for a year so far - one hour a week. I now have a GCSE in French (an english qualification for 16 year olds). I am studying more this year to take the A Level in French (its the equivalent to your baccaleureate). I have come on here mainly to improve my writing skills and reading skills in French. On an english forum for students www.thestudentroom.co.uk many people including 'Frenchies' (as we say in english) who post on that forum say that they have improved their english skills by posting on english forums, so I am trying to do the same, but in French!

I would like to study French and German at univeristy in England soon. but I have to pass the A level first, then go to uni! In England, the level of foreign language teaching is nowhere near as high a quality as it is in non-english speaking european countries like France and Germany, so we have a poorer understanding of languages in England. It is a shame, because people like me who like languages are not pushed hard enough in school and the teachers will not teach us more advanced french early on. They take a year at the beginning of secondary school (11 years old) to teach you just to count to 100 in French and say your name, where you live, a bit about your parents and thats about it! Its ludicrous! Unfortunately, foreign languages are not compulsory in english schools, so you do not have to have a qualification in them, unless you choose to! If you choose to then you are special (like me) and hopefully there will be more jobs available for us

And it is easier for foreign people to learn English as it is everywhere now - on television, in shops, in films, but foreign languages are not so easy to find in england!

Lol, Amandine, I know how you feel, when I went to Paris in September, I felt too scared to talk much in French because I took a long time and my accent wasnt great. I went into Paul's (the bakery) for a chocolat chaud and pain au chocolat and the lady serving didnt understand my french accent- I had to repeat to her, Je veux/ voudrais un chocolat chaud, svp. It made me feel embarassed

But the more you practice, the better you get. And in England people like the fact that you are trying to speak the language (I think this is true of many countries though). However, sometimes when I go abroad, for example, when I went to Germany a few years ago, I would try and speak German in the shops but the shop assistants spoke back to me in English, it was annoying because I wanted to improve my German! It was the same in Paris!

Amandine, what english speaking country are you in now? If you want to improve your English, i suggest going on thestudentroom website, its for students and its masssive! There are lots of international people on there too and it has loads of help with studying and information on english universities as well as general discussions and homework help! Also, if you need me to correct any work for you , just ask, or if you want me to correct your posts in English, just ask

I explain : "my" in french is "ma" or "mon". "ma" = feminine, "mon" masculine.

I don't know how it is in Germany, I think they have a good level. But France is probably one of the worst European countries for foreign languages ! The level at school is really bad. Seriously.

That's true. So that French people have no excuses to be bad at english !

But, unfortunately, it is not that easy when it comes to languages such as russian, which is a language I like so much ! I hardly ever have opportunities to practice it. I couldn't take a russian course last year at uni, so I'm forgetting everything I learnt and I don't like this feeling at all !

I've been living in Edinburgh for a month. This place is amazing ! When I arrived here, I just couldn't believe what I saw ! It's so so beautiful ! :)

I'll stay here for the whole academic year. I'm studying at Edinburgh Uni. The university is really impressive compared to the French university I come from ! I'm so lucky to have the opportunity to study in such an old and beautiful British uni ! I still can't believe !

I would like to go to Leeds uni to study French and German, but I am also applying on UCAS (you will probably have heard of this in England) to Queen Mary's, University of London and the University of Edinburgh too! I've never been to Scotland before, but I saw that Edinburgh has a course for french and german where you dont need an A level in french, because you can take it from a beginners level- it is the only uni in the UK to do this, I believe! I shall apply for the French and German course there that is connected to European Union studies as well. Also, at the University of Edinburgh it is free to study for Scottish students and half price for Uk residents, so if I go there it will be half price tuition fees But I really hope to get into Leeds, as I have visited it many times because my friend studies dentistry there and it is a lovely town and they have a great Students Union

At the moment I live in Canterury in Kent (I was born here) which is in South east England, below London. You will probably have heard of the Archbishiop of Canterbury, I think? We get lots of french school children here on school trips visiting the cathedral. They are very cheeky- one boy asked me for some cigarettes and he was only 13! I dont smoke anyway, so he had to ask other people in the street!

The studentroom is great I think you will be able to understand a lot of it, except maybe some slang and some jokes, but I can see your english is of a very high standard from your last post I would love for my French to be as good as your english Imagine if I tried to write this post in French - you would understand none of it, I would make soo many mistakes

Maybe to keep up your Russian you should listen to the news in russian and watch russian films? You could even do a language course in Russia or go on holiday there. My Grandfather is from Ukraine so I decided to learn some Russian at school evening classes as it is similar(ish) to ukrainian. However, the lessons were only basic and only for 22 hours altogether. I can remember all the numbers still - adin, dva, tri etc I would like to improve my russian at home. I have got some audiolessons off the internet and from my library in Russian and some songs by Leningrad on my ipod!

I do not know if you know of this website, but I use it myself and it is very good for languages. It is called wordreference.com and it has french-english/english-french/spanish/russian/german/portuguese etc with a dictionary and synonyms, idioms and conjugated verbs. There are also questions asked in a forum. It is useful to use when you have homework to write in french/ English

Your english is not soo bad! I can understand what you are saying. You prefer to learn french so you took a break from your english course in order to pursue your french. I am in the same boat as you, trying to improve my french, although I think it will take me a long time Bonne Chance!

I didn't worked that much, because english has always seemed something easy to learn to me.

I've studied english for 7 years before my Baccalauréat but, as I said previously, the level is not brilliant in France. Then I've studied English Language, British and American Civilization, British and American Literature and a few other subjects at university in France, for 2 years (I'm taking a "Licence d'Anglais"). I'm doing my third year here in Edinburgh and I have English Language, American History, English Literature and Translation. I'm used to have all my lessons in english, to write my essays in english, etc... But you should here me when I SPEAK english ! It sounds really awful ! I'm not used to it yet, but I hope I'll improve quickly.

A LOT of French people smoke. I realized that when I arrived here ! In France, if you need to borrow a lighter to light your cigaret on, you can ask any group of young people you meet and be sure they have one. But here, my French friends who smoke have a hard time finding someone who can lend them a lighter ! In France, you see people smoking in the street all the time. Here in Edinburgh, there are so few people smoking in the street that I always notice them. And it's true that some really young people, or I'd even better say children, smoke too.

I'm smoking occasionally, a few cigarets a year (you'd rather call them spliffs, to be honest :) ). I couldn't handle being a "real" smoker... I'm too poor !

I went to Russia once, a few years ago, with my Russian class. I went to Saint-Petersburg. I had dreamt of it since I was a little girl ! I hope to go back there in the next years, for a few months maybe. One of my most important dreams is traveling along the Transiberian line. I really hope I'll do that in the next few years too !

I use this website when I'm doing translation. I couldn't bring my big French-English dictionnary with me because I couldn't pack too many things to come here by plane. Fortunately, we can use the internet !

I'm an exchange student (Erasmus program).

In France, I'm at my hometown university, which is Université de Rouen (I doubt you ever heard of it ! ).

Hi everybody !

I wanted to improve my english, so I come But I don't know if I have the level to understand you ... In my English classes, I understand all, but when I try to improve my English at home, reading the weekly New York Times of Le Monde, I don't really understand all the text... It's the same when I try to read a Harry Potter in english. Do I have to worried about it ?

And my accent in english is quite ... pathetic. I've never been to America or a English speaking country, but I very often watch English shows with french subtitles.

What do you think ?

No worries haha, I know bunch of people in your sistuation. Plus hey, your writing is quite good

I Often say that the English language is just like a puzzle, right now you know the basics, and you have the central pieces of your puzzle. What you have to do is to learn vocab just like if you were adding, step by step, other pieces until you complete the whole thing

And If you don't like puzzles ... Then just go to the United States or w/e durring your summer vacations It is the best way to learn.

I think that you either use Online translators to understand French, or you are still learning and is quite mistaking and mixing up.

I can easily recognize someone when he or she is using Online translators because those things often mess up your sentence at the end. For example she said "Je suis la pour toi". Because they don't know the difference between "Je" and "Vous" Since both are translated as "You" in English.

No misunderstanding, I didn't said it was a bad thing to use translators, but i've already talked with her on another thread, and she didn't understand me, probably because I didn't wrote my sentence correctly, so I am presuming that it didn't made sense when she translated it

Okay, you did some little faults (that some French guys do ...), but it's quite good you know

J'ai dit qu'elle utilisait ou un traducteur en ligne ou alors [i think it's better for the understanding here] qu'elle apprenait le français, donc qu'elle faisait [i often do this error ... and I'm french ^^] des erreurs et mélangeait. Dans ma phrase "either" peut être traduit par "ou", mais quand on utilise either ça laisse présumé que celui qui parle ou écrit va laisser [in french, we have a way to find if it's er or é : if you can replace it by "pris", "mordu" or another of the 3rd group, it's "é" ; when you have to replace by "prendre", "mordre" or another of the 3rd group, it's "er"] le lecteur ou à [you can try to replace it by "avait", if it doesn't have any sense, it's "à"] la personne en face deux choix
