Just out of curiosity: how long have you all studied english? In finland, children start to study their first foreign language at the age of nine (at latest). I guess in more than 90% of the cases that foreign language being english, though some study german, french or swedish. Second foreign language is started at the age of 13, third one in high school, at the age of 16, although the 3rd one is not compulsory.

I'd say that the subtitles on tv help a lot to learn a foreign language.

Here in France we start english really at 11, with a few lessons before. The 2nd language is started at 13 and 3rd one (not for eveybody) at 16. So it's pretty similar to you...

But we're not very good to study that, don't know why... methods maybe...

OK, things have changed.

Now children start English/German in CE2 (around 8-9) and the purpose is to be able to start the second foreign language when they are in 6e (10-11) but for the moment it depends on the "collège" you are going to.

There's no subtitles in France, that's why people have a problem with foreigns languages I think.

For example In Belgium, Flemish speak 3 languages fluently.

That's our problems.

Most country who speak English have not the foreign language in priority (english is everywhere).

You're right NoT PuB !

And in France we can't speak foreign langage out of school. It's possible if yours parents speak other langage, but it's not frequent.

You can read some books in english, but that all.

If you're a traveller you can practice english, german or other langage.

But personally, I don't speak english since school and my vocabular is very limited. So I can't really talk with english people.

What a pity :o !

I totally agree. Last time that I spent 6 months in France I started to forget my english, most of all because I was so concentrated on learning french :o ..but also because I didn't hear english anymore in regular bases. When I came back to Finland, my friends told me that I have a french accent in english. :o

Yep, most of american, british or irish people that I know are miserable in any foreign language since they don't feel that it would be necessary to learn any other languages, as "everyone" is supposed to speak english. Well, we (lucky ones) that have finnish as mother tongue, we don't have the luxury to be understood in our mothertongue outside of the national borders... :D

Hello people

how are you?, yeah, here is the proof that when I speak english I feel obliged to say things that belong to the kind of sentences I never use in french; for example : "How Are you?"

Even if it isn't obvious, I'm reading Harry Potter, (the whole work) in english to progress! although it isn't a very formative experience because it's far easier understand english and translate in french, than the opposite way.

I'll conclude sayin' philippe du web is definitly my idol on this forum, because he most has the feeling to annoy people the better it's possible

thanks philippe

If I make a mistake, tell me, my english is not terrible.

And I try to write as soon as possible for not forgotten this language because today the personn don't speak english some make a lot of problemes at work, at holidays in others countries.

My soon call Vincent, learn this language since the ce1, optinnal this year and in ce2 it's obligatory, it's a very good thing, I think and at house we speak english and I try very slowly to make some words in english language.

Tomorrow I have a bad day, I'll must see the past and it's very difficult for me.

Hi everyone !

Philippe du web : your English is pretty good and thyack : reading Harry Potter is not a bad idea at all.

ok, it's easier in this way but you gonna learn a lot of new words ans thus improve your English vocabulary.

Anyway, ifyou really like reading in English you should read "Talk To Tha Snail, by Stephen Clarke), it's the story of an English man in Paris and it's so true...

Have a good day,

Bye

Philippe, sometimes books can actually be easier to read than magazines. Depends on the magazine too, the 'serious' ones that tell about politics and society are usually the worst ones.. :o They tend to use odd expressions or refer to things you don't necessarily know if you don't belong to the same society.

However, you don't have to translate each and every word, you can guess quite a lot by the contexte. ...That's how I've read the french newspapers, especially in the beginning. :o
